How this Awesome Service Came to Be

MoviePass is a subscription-based, ticketing service for movies. It started in 2011, and the initial price for a monthly subscription was $29 to $34 a month, depending on your location. For this amount, you can already watch obe 2D movie every day, as long as you are subscribed. This was a great way to force people to watch movies in movie theaters. And during its test trial in San Francisco, MoviePass gained over 19,000 subscribers. There was a problem, though, local movie theaters claimed MoviePass didn’t want to talk to them. So, they declined service to MoviePass users.

This was only one of the many problems MoviePass faced since its inception. Even though it’s a great service, poor decision-making and strings of complaints are what ultimately killed MoviePass.

How MoviePass Ended

From 2014 to 2017, MoviePass formed a partnership with AMC. But when they cut their prices from $29 to $34 per month down to only $9.95 per month, AMC had to sever its ties with MoviePass citing the prices are unsustainable. But MoviePass gained popularity because of this price slash, gaining over 1 million users in just four months. But this proved popularity couldn’t save them any longer.

MoviePass also had many complaints from its users. From glitchy platforms to unpredictable changes in service. Helios, the parent company of MoviePass, even lost an estimated $20 million due to the lowering of prices. In the end, MoviePass had to face bankruptcy and closed in 2019. And this is how MoviePass, a great service, ended. They did leave a mark in the theater industry, though. So they still managed to reach their goals.
