Yes, this is a sad story with a
good ending! The owner Brian Jose (pronounced yos) sailed his Pearson
Triton down from Port Townsend, Washington.
The boat "Shelly B" was anchored in the Bay on the night of March 20,
2007 and caught fire from an unknown source (possibly electrical).
Brian was not on board at the time. He lost everything he had with the
exception of his driver's license and the clothes on his back and his
flipflops. The Mexican Navy attempted to put out the fire, but it was a
futile attempt and the boat burned (melted) to the waterline and sank. Club Cruceros de La Paz launched a campaign to assist Brian and so far, cash donations have topped $1500.00 U.S. Cruisers have also generously donated clothes, pots and pans, boat equipment and much more. But the best was when a small group of cruisers negotiated the purchase of a Pearson Triton, owned by a Mexican, which was also at anchor for quite some time in the Bay. They towed it to the marina and, working feverishly, cleaned the boat. In the afternoon of March 21, they led a blindfolded Brian down the dock at Marina Palmar where they presented him with his new home. Needless to say there was surprise and joy all around. Brian's new Triton is apparently in better shape than his old one, however it lacks a rudder. They were able to salvage the rudder and winches and Marina Palmar is hauling the new boat out so the bottom can be cleaned and painted. A very rewarding experience all around! Mexico requires that every boat check out of the port with the Port Captain "Capitania de Puerto" every time it leaves for more than 24 hours. Even if you are staying within the same port district, you must clear out and clear back in when you return. In La Paz you are requested to contact the Capitania verbally on Channel 16 and the Navy (Cuarta Zona Naval) on Channel 11 as you leave port. The check in/checkout laws changed in May, 2005. You must still complete the international arrival and departure clearances upon entering or leaving Mexico. After checking into Mexico and traveling along the coastline or in the Sea of Cortes, or when changing crew, you must inform the marina office or the local port captain's office. This can be done using VHF radio or filling out a simple form. - Click Here for answers to other questions Opera Videos Donated A fabulous collection of 130 Opera videos amassed by Bob Connelly on the SV/Waltzing Matilda has been donated to the Music School in La Paz. Capt. Bob died in the early 90's but opera lovers at that time retrieved the collection and have kept it together with stewdardship passing from Margarite Brosing (Venus), Margery Meisels and Bill Booth (Ikiru) and Sylvia and Chuck Wheeler (La Paloma). The music school is undergoing certification and they feel that this donation will only enhance their reputation. Tom Irerton (La Casita) helped with this transition. Donations of music instruments, musical scores, or any other kind of help is gladly accepted from the community or visitors.
